1999 Yellowstone National Park Commemorative Silver Dollar

In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed Yellowstone Park into law and helped create America's national park system. The newest commemorative coin, the Yellowstone Commemorative Silver Dollar, celebrates this country's first national park.

Yellowstone National Park is recognized around the world as a universal symbol of America's great western frontier, its untamed wilderness, mystery, and natural beauty. One side of the Yellowstone Commemorative Silver Dollar depicts an erupting steam geyser - one of Yellowstone's miraculous wonders. The other side features an American Buffalo - the icon of the American West. Behind the buffalo unfolds a brilliant sunset over the majestic Rocky Mountains. Yellowstone is the only place in the world where a wild bison herd has survived continuously since prehistoric times.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each coin will be given to the Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Foundation to help support and maintain the U.S. national park system. Help preserve one of our country's most enduring national treasures with a coin you'll be able to enjoy for a lifetime.

The Yellowstone National Park Commemorative Silver Dollar is being produced in a limited edition. It is an exquisite coin made from 90% silver and 10% alloy, weighs 26.73 grams, and has a diameter of 1.5 inches. The obverse features a rendition of a Yellowstone steam geyser with a tree-lined landscape in the background. The reverse design captures a stately American Buffalo on the plains with a brilliant sun and sun rays rising above the mountains in the background.

The Yellowstone National Park Commemorative Silver Dollar will be issued in both uncirculated and proof versions. Both contain 90% silver and 10% alloy. This is the last silver commemorative dollar to be issued by the U.S. Mint in 1999 - before the start of the new millenium.
